Crowns are most often used to restore a tooth’s functionality and appearance after a restorative procedure such as a root canal. They are synthetic caps, typically made of a porcelain-like material, that are placed on the top of a tooth.
Most often a tooth must be reduced in size to house a crown. Then, an impression is made of the existing tooth to form a custom-designed crown. A temporary crown is sometimes applied until the permanent is ready. Once ready, the permanent crown is cemented in place.
Cared for properly, a quality crown could last as many as eight years or more. It is essential to floss the area of the crown to prevent the collection of plaque around the restoration. Jaw clenching, teeth grinding, and brittle foods can all compromise the grip of the crown.
When tooth decay becomes so severe that large sections of the tooth must be extracted, crowns are often used for repair. They are also used to attach bridges, cover implants, and prevent cracked teeth from growing worse.
