When root canal therapy, fillings, crowns, and other restoration procedures are unable to save a tooth, extraction may be the only possible solution. Before extraction, the area around the tooth is numbed with anesthetic to reduce pain. Antibiotics may be needed afterward to avoid infection.

Post-operation smoking, vigorous brushing and rinsing, and drinking through a straw are strongly discouraged, as they can impede the healing process and may reopen the wound. A cold compress applied to the cheek near the extraction area can help reduce swelling.

Proper post-extraction care

Wisdom teeth can cause problems as they tend to erupt too close to permanent teeth, causing crowding, unaligned bites, and other problems. If it's causing problems, your wisdom teeth are most likely impacted. They can cause extreme pain, facial swelling, infection, and more.

Today, tooth extraction procedures are far less painful than they once were, thanks to powerful anesthetics and sedatives. Oftentimes, a patient feels little to no discomfort afterward.
