Root canals are the tiny ducts that branch off from beneath the top of the tooth and course their way downward to the tip of the root. Every tooth has between one and four root canals. When infection enters a root canal, it can lead to serious harm for the inner pulp and root of the tooth.
Root canal therapy is a highly successful treatment that involves removing the diseased tissue in order to halt the spread of infection and restore the healthy section of the tooth. The aim of the procedure is to save the infected tooth, while the only previous option was extraction.
The treatment can take three steps. A small hole is drilled from the top of the tooth into the inner chamber. The diseased tissue is then removed, the inner chamber is cleansed, and the tiny canals are reshaped. The chamber is then filled with a medication to prevent infection.
A diseased inner tooth can cause many problems including pain and sensitivity, the first indicators of a problem. A spreading infection can cause small pockets of pus to develop and cause an abscess.
