If you are a loud snorer or have trouble sleeping each night, you may be one of the estimated 18 to 20 million American adults suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The disorder obstructs the upper airway with excess tissue, making it difficult (especially during sleep) to breathe properly.
There is a wide variety of different appliances that can help lessen an obstruction to the airways. Oral applications are the most common form of treatment for mild-to-moderate OSA. It repositions the tongue and lower jaw forward in order to allow airways to stay open.
Another widely used form of OSA treatment is the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). A CPAP repeatedly pumps air pressure into the airways of the user, keeping them open. Some people find CPAPs to be invasive and might prefer using an oral appliance.
It’s important to treat OSA early on, as the disorder if left unchecked, can increase your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, irregular heartbeat, heart attack, and stroke.
