Veneers are an excellent choice for teeth that are badly stained, shaped, or crooked. They are thin pieces of porcelain or plastic cemented over the front of teeth to alter their shape or color. Veneers have a longer life expectancy and color stability than bonding.
The tooth preparation visit typically lasts one to two hours. During the appointment, the teeth are lightly buffed to uphold the small added thickness of the veneer. Afterward, a mold of the teeth is taken and sent to the laboratory so the veneers can be fabricated.
During the final “bonding" visit, the veneers are situated on the tooth surface with water or glycerin on the teeth to verify their fit and get an idea of the proper shade or color. Once color is decided, the veneer is bonded to the tooth with
a special cement and visible light beam.
At least three appointments are typically needed for a veneer procedure to take place: diagnosis and treatment planning, preparation, and bonding.
